The designer chose to show an image of Robben Island where the freedom fighters were kept. It captures the spirit of the struggle and the Long Walk to Freedom. The inscription reads “1964-1982″ the prison years which were spent on the Island. It has the Nelson Mandela signature at the bottom.

The obverse of the coin has an elegant portrait of  smiling Nelson Mandela which truly captures the real spirit of forgiveness and reconciliation. The inscriptions reads “A LONG WALK TO FREEDOM” and “NELSON ROLIHLAHLA”
